“She is free to do what she wants, and she is free not to do it.” — Nawal El Saawadi
The Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of ‘Modern’ is: “Relating to the present or recent times as opposed to the remote past.”
But what does it mean to be a modern woman? If we point out the rules or guidelines, then there must be a subclause in there that allows you to break them, especially if you are a modern woman.
Equality is a word that springs to mind, as does empowerment. Both go hand in hand for a modern woman.
What does it take to be empowered and how do we go about achieving equality?
How do you survive when everyone is classified as a modern woman in this modern world?
Knowledge is power and key to survival in this modern world we live in. Never stop educating yourself.
Whether this is by reading a book or an article, investigating and questioning the internet (yes, ask Dr Google), never formulating an opinion on just one comment, talking to people who have had real life experiences, being open to discussion and debate, learning a new skill, challenging yourself and above all, continually trying to better yourself.
Freedom is one of the rights that many have fought hard to achieve for us in this modern world. It’s what we do with it that makes the difference.
We are fortunate to have choices, and as a modern woman, we understand the process by which we’ve come to have these. We do not take these for granted.
When our choices are taken away and we are silenced, then we all must understand that our liberty is being taken away from us.
As a modern woman, we should be able to choose who we love or are friends with, where we live, who we vote for and what water bubbler to drink out of.
We also understand that each of these choices is a vote for the life we want to live and to pass on to future generations.
Stand up for what you believe in and watch the ripple effect.
When Rosa Parkes refused to offer her seat to a white passenger in 1955 (not that long ago, if you think about it), she had no idea of the ongoing effect this civil rights movement would have on the world today. Thanks Rosa!
Equality for all women, men and humans.
Did you know that there’s no scientific basis for race? It’s a made up label that’s been used to define and separate people for millennia, but the concept of race is not grounded in genetics. We all have African ancestors. Ask National Geographic.
No, we’re not talking about a college campus.
Fraternity simply means a group of people sharing common interest or friendship and support within a group. So, grab your buddy.
A problem shared is a problem halved (or something like that).
Voice your thoughts and opinions, but also to listen to others.
When doing so, you are spreading knowledge and sentiment and also listening and absorbing the opinions of others. This is how change happens.
Fraternities in this modern world are much easier to come by than traditionally.
As a modern woman, you can join Facebook groups, gyms, running groups, open mic nights, charities, clubs, and also listen to a multitude of podcasts to listen to and participate in.
Not just in the sense of politics or anarchy, but for fashion, style, behaviour, tradition and making history.
Set your own rules and do what you think is right and will be good for you, while also benefiting others.
No one likes a Shaun (the sheep).
Test theories, question traditions, think laterally and use your voice.
A modern woman is anyone who is living in the now, who questions, who asks, who challenges, who stands up for her rights and for others.
